Remote oceanic diving at Layang-Layang

I stayed at the island resort at Layang-Layang and travelled to its remote oceanic dive sites by speedboat.

The journey

A small base in a very large sea

Layang-Layang was a resort-based journey, but it never felt close to an ordinary coast. The island sat in an oceanic setting, with speedboats carrying us from the resort into deep blue water and reef walls.

The remoteness is central to my memory of the place. I have not added exact dates, named sites or encounters that are not confirmed in the available notes. This article keeps the destination personal without pretending that missing details are known.

Layang-Layang

The map places this remote Malaysian atoll in the South China Sea, far from the mainland. Select a labelled pin for further dive information.

Each marker is anchored by its latitude and longitude and attached to the centre of its pin, so it remains on the same site while the map is zoomed or moved. Confirm entry points and navigational coordinates with the operating dive centre.

Looking back

The excitement of being far offshore

The resort and speedboats gave the trip its daily structure, while the oceanic setting made every departure feel like a journey away from the familiar.
